payara sport fishing Sport fishing can be had in the Tambopata river in Baltimori, a place globally renowned for catching payara or chambira, in addition to catfish, zungaro, maidenfish, the speck, and gamitana. The Payara (Hydrolycus scomberoides), also known as "Vampire Fish", is a close relative of the piranha. Payara's can eat any fish smaller than them, but the bulk of their diet consists of piranhas, which they impale with their sharp teeth. The payara's most noticeable feature is the two long fangs protruding from its lower jaw. These fangs can be 4 to 6 inches long! Payara love to hit the same bait again and again, making huge acrobatic leaps out of the water once hooked
